The World Health Organisation (WHO) definition of ‘optimum brain health’

‘… allowing a person to realise their full potential over the life course, irrespective of the presence or absence of disorders.’ (WHO)

Throughout distinct life stages, spanning infancy, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, later adulthood, pregnancy and menopause for women, various determinants play a pivotal role in influencing brain health, as well as mental, emotional and physical well-being.

These determinants encompass factors that are most times within our control, such as adequate hydration, sound nutrition, appropriate supplementation, regular physical activity, social engagement, hormonal optimisation, sufficient sleep, and exposure to natural light.

Safeguarding optimal brain health is tantamount to investing in insurance to safeguard our future health and well-being. This entails shaping our current actions to reduce the risk of disease susceptibility in the future. Seems commonsensical?

However, this contrasts with the findings of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) resource centre. GBD brings together data and analysis of worldwide trends providing a comprehensive picture of disability and mortality across disease regionally/globally.

GBD reveals the almost epidemic extent of conditions like depression, anxiety, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease across time and age groups, based on, for example 'years lived with disability’ (YLD).

YLD is the measure of years spent in less than full health. GBD data clearly illustrates the substantial impact these illnesses are having on quality of life and health outcomes. But there is something you can do about it!

Achieving and maintaining optimum brain health does not necessitate daily gym visits, predawn meditation rituals, exclusive organic diets, or perpetual immersion in cold water!

Instead, it encompasses the application in everyday life of sensible, evidence-based practices toward enhancing brain health and general well-being. Starting with a walk in nature and calling a family member or friend for a conversation.

At Blindspot, we integrate education alongside our evidence-based neuropsychotherapy and coaching psychology practice, as well as within our Retained Service, providing foundational resources on brain health, wellbeing and more.

We aim to support you during and following your time with Blindspot. Alongside therapy or coaching, we aim to facilitate uptake of practical strategies that suit you, and your unique needs and lifestyle.
